It has recently gotten to my attention that many young people in Liberia are becoming hugely interested in entrepreneurship, including you. I mean, if you weren’t interested would you be reading this article now?
I believe you already know what you should do as an entrepreneur. If you don't, let me give you a snippet. You should essentially look for problems in your surroundings and find solutions to them. Those are just two attributes of an entrepreneur. A third attribute is to monetize the solutions to the problems you discover.
Now, how you monetize the solution to a particular problem requires a business approach. It is therefore important to note that entrepreneurs should be business strategists. However, to start and operate a business is relative to different countries. In this article, I am going to show you eight simple steps you can follow to start a profitable business in Liberia as an entrepreneur. Let's jump right into it, shall we?
Define the purpose of your business
This is the first step all emerging entrepreneurs should anticipate in starting a business. Every business starts with a single idea. However, a business idea alone does not define the purpose of a business. Your first task as an entrepreneur is to write down the purpose of your business.
What do you hope to achieve with your business? Many people start businesses without the slightest idea what they hope to achieve. You cannot start a petty trade business and expect to be a wealthy person in a few years. After reading this article, you should distinguish yourself from people who start businesses without a defined purpose.
While the purposes of starting a business could range from accumulating wealth, securing a livelihood, building an additional source of income or to avoid working an eight hour job, you should not limit what you could achieve with your business. Most entrepreneurs are heavily interested in making an impact in their respective communities and the country at large by building businesses that will create jobs and increase the productivity of their country.
Study your preferred niche/industry
You have defined and written down the purpose of your business. That’s wonderful! Now, what is the niche of your business? Every business falls in a specific industry or niche. For example, you realized that there is demand for electronic materials in your city. You have discovered that people in your city desire to have televisions, radios, fans, laptops, etc.
They trekked several miles to buy these materials. As an entrepreneur, you understand that this is a potential problem that needs solution. You must put your entrepreneurial cap on and start to brainstorm a near-perfect solution. A possible solution to this problem could be to open an electronic store where people could have easy access to these materials without having to travel several miles. Now, as a distributor of electronic materials, you are in the technology industry.
The question now is, what do you know about the technology? If you do not understand how the industry you are in works, this is what will happen: you will pay taxes to the government, you will pay your employees salary and if revenue cannot be increased and sustained, you will start to lay-off your workers and eventually go into bankruptcy--business collapse. Do you understand that knowing how your preferred industry works is very crucial to the success of your business?
Who are your competitors
Starting a business as an entrepreneur is like going to war with other entrepreneurs. Now, would you go to war if you do not know who your opponent is, which types of weapons he or she has, his or her belligerent formation—does he or she move more ground or air control than you? Now, my conclusion is if you go to war without knowing who or what you are faced with, your chances of survival will be very slender.
Pay keen attention now. You are still the distributor of electronic materials in your city, but after two years, demand has decreased likewise sales and revenue. You, my friend, have now become one of the distributors of electronic materials in your city. This is not magic or witch. Another entrepreneur has simply waged war on you. Money is not good for you alone.
Another entrepreneur has noticed the profitability in the business and decided to jump into it. Not just that, he realized that you do not have great customer’s service and that your prices are too high, certainly because you have a monopoly in the industry in your city. This is a potential problem that another entrepreneur had to solve.
Therefore, he opened his own electronic store. He had great customer’s services and his prices were are very affordable.
Now, if you want to stay in business, you better find out who this entrepreneur is, what his prices are, which types of electronic materials he sells, where his business is located, while customers suddenly started running to his store instead of yours. When you have found out everything there is to know about your opponent, do one thing: Do anything positive and business wise to win the war. After all, he/she started that fight! lol...
Give your business a name
Now, I know you are probably wondering why this list did not start with naming your business after defining your purpose. After all, when a baby is born, before he or she starts to walk and make friends or enemies, he or she is firstly given a name. No worries, I’ll tell you shortly. Businesses—corporations or partnerships have most of the legal rights a privilege of a person, so I am not going to argue.
You might be right. This list should have started with giving your business a name, but let’s say you did not do market research to know who your competitors are and you give your business a name that has already been taken by another entrepreneur.
Chances are you could be taken to court for using another person’s business name. Another way to look at the logic is this: let’s say you want to build a website for your business.
You will be required to have a domain name and this name should be unique to your business. In this case, if the name you chose has already been taken by another person, you will have to find another one because two websites cannot have the same domain name on the world wide web (WWW). On the other hand, your industry type and business purpose could all give you clues to naming your business. This is why it is very important to know the purpose of your business, your industry type and competitors before naming your business.
Design your logo
Your logo is practically the face of your business. It is your business's identity. Customers will recognize your business by its logo. If you want your business to stand out amongst others, everything about it must be unique to it, including your logo. Most people say logos are brand identities. I know you understand the power of first impressions. That's what you want to create for your business.
Before designing your logo, you must have done your research to have a rough idea of your competitors to avoid ignorantly replicating another entrepreneur’s logo. Remember that logos are identities. You do not want your business to be identified by another entrepreneur’s logo because in the end you will lose revenue and if the purpose of your business is to accumulate wealth, duplicating another logo is not a great start. Write your business plan
Tell me, what would happen if people build houses without drawing house plans? Wait, let me ask you another question. What would happen if you were going to a place, you do not know and you do not have a compass or a map? If you answer these questions right, you’ll understand that even a business needs a scheme.
Now, your business plan will talk about your products and services, your marketing strategy, and your financial projections amongst others. Remember a few seconds ago I said businesses have most, if not all the characteristics of a human. If that is true, well it is true, then a business must have a plan.
